Phoenix Backyard Living: Tips for Hosting the Perfect Pool Party

It’s that time of year again where the pool will serve as the perfect backdrop for a party outdoors.  So what does it take to be the “hostess with the mostest?” Here are a few tips to create a party where everyone will enjoy themselves.

  • Rather than having to buy extra things to decorate, get creative with what you have. If you’ve got a kiddie pool on hand for your little one, turn it into a large ice chest for all the drinks. All those buckets the kids like to play with? Turn those into food bowls and use them for fruit or chips. Put the frisbees to good use and turn them upside down and float some votives around in the pool at night to give the pool a little illumination.
  • Don’t go overboard with food especially if it’s a children’s party. Appetizers and finger foods are just as good as a full course meal, so think along those lines and find foods that don’t require you to serve three courses but will still fill people up.
  • When you’re outside, don’t worry about tons of table space. Get our your lawn chairs and camping chairs, blow up a few rafting floats and place your towels all over the yard. This kind of scenery will be just as good, if not better, as table and chairs that seat everyone.
  • Don’t forget the music. Be sure to set up a stereo system and speakers so you can play tunes that fit the party. And make sure all the pool toys are accessible and ready to go. Last but not least, don’t forget to have fun.

How about picking a theme for your next backyard bash? If you’re in need of some creative pool party ideas that kids and adults are sure to enjoy, look no further.

If you’re a movie buff, the pool is the perfect place to host a movie night. After all, who says you have to enjoy the pool only in the day time? Projectors are easy to come by, so toss a white sheet against a flat area of your house or drop one over the patio opening and play a movie on your makeshift screen. Put the floats to good use as comfy seating and hop in the pool to float around and enjoy your movie by the moonlight.

Season and holiday-themed parties are always a hit and easy to do. Change the lights in the pool to reflect the time of year and add those splashes of color throughout the backyard. Float candles in the pool at night to spruce up the place and add a special ambiance; and serve food and drinks that reflect the time of year. Whether it’s Easter, Christmas or the Fourth of July, the pool will always serve as the perfect backdrop.

If it’s a kid-themed party, have fun and let the kids enjoy the backyard. Break out the sidewalk chalk so they can draw on the concrete deck. Pass out cans of shaving cream or silly string so they can have fun with each other and then jump in the pool afterwards. Create water craft stations so they can have fun in and out of the pool.

The options really are endless. So think outside the box to host a party that people are sure to talk about as the years go on.
